seeding tips
- Prepare the seedbed
The seedbed should be well tilled and level. A relatively fine seedbed is preferred. - Spread the seed
Properly set your spreader at the rate for sowing seed ( new lawns are generally 4 lbs/ 1000 sq ft ). Place half the grass seed in the spreader. Seed this half by walking in one direction. Then with the second half seed crisscross to the first direction. This pattern ensures even coverage.
Starter fertilizers are usually recommended. - Covering the seed
Lightly rake the seedbed. Use a stiff metal rake and lightly push. The plan is to barely cover the seed. - Roll the surface
To ensure good contact between seed and soil, roll the entire area with a roller that’s filled only half with water. - Water
Apply the water gently so that you don't wash the seed away or create puddles. Best times to water is morning or evening. Keep soil moist, if soils dry out germination will be reduced or young seedlings will die. Depending on the seed mixture germination is generally between 7 to 21 days.
