Leafcutter Bees / Mégachiles
Northstar Seed Ltd. provides high quality leafcutter bee’s and larvae (Megachile rotundata) by the 'gallon' as "loose cell“, in standardized "styro blocks“, or pre-hatched for delivery. We provide all necessary leafcutter bee production equipment to the world market.
Alfalfa seed production requires the use of these small but efficient pollinators to increase seed yields and profitability but new uses in fruit crops such as cranberries, wild blueberries, melons, grapes and apples continue to be explored. Hybrid canola production, as well, has been dramatically increased by the use of these leafcutting bees and is slowly edging the honeybee out as an alternative pollinator in this crop.
As a pollinator, the leafcutter bee is an extremely effective workhorse despite its relatively small size compared to the honeybee. Although the honeybee is widely used to pollinate most crops, the leafcutter bee is gaining ground and notoriety.
