Seeding time
plant as early as possible into moist soil between 1 to 1.5 inches deep at a soil temperature of 10 degree Celsius or higher.
Selecting Hybrids
recommended to plant two hybrids.
Plant populations
Corn seed is packages 80,000 kernels per bag. Plant grazing corn at 30,000 kernels/ acre with optimum stand of 29,000 plants/ acre.
Row spacing
20 to 30 inches
Fertilizing
corn is a high yielding crop needing good fertility to reach target yields. Estimate fertility at 6 lbs N, 3.3 lbs P, 8 lbs K per ton of yield. Growers should target between 10 to 20 ton of yield depending on rain fall and or irrigation.
Weed control
corn is not competitive with weeds in early growth stages. Fields need to be ‘weed free’ until mid to late July. Conventional corns have various chemicals that can be used. Weeds that need to be controlled from emergence until mid July require a residual chemical (ex:Shotgun) along with grassy weed control. Roundup corn fields should be sprayed at the 3 leaf stage and again if necessary at the 7-8 leaf stage if weeds are present.
Strip grazing
there needs to be some way of limiting the amount of corn that animals can access at one time. Electric fence is a good option.
